THE 78TH GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS
The 78th Golden Globe Awards was held on February 28, 2021, and was a virtual event due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the unprecedented circumstances, the ceremony was a success and celebrated some of the best movies and television shows of the year.
The show was hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who returned to the stage to co-host the Golden Globes for the fourth time. The show was broadcast from both coasts, with Fey hosting from the Rainbow Room in New York City, and Poehler hosting from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
One of the biggest winners of the night was "Nomadland," a film directed by Chloe Zhao, which won the award for Best Motion Picture - Drama, as well as Best Director. The picture follows a lady in her 60s who, after losing all in the Great Slump, boards on a journey through the American West, living as a modern nomad in a van. Frances McDormand also won the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama for her role in the film.
In the class of Best Motion Picture - Harmonious or Humor, "Borat Succeeding Movie film" took home the reward. The movie, directed by Jason Woliner and starring Sacha Baron Cohen, is a mockumentary that follows Borat Sagdiyev as he returns to America to understand the country and its culture.
In the television category, "The Crown" was the big winner of the night, taking home four awards, including Best Television Series - Drama. The show, created by Peter Morgan, follows the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and the British royal family. The show also won awards for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Drama for Emma Corrin, who played Princess Diana, and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama for Josh O'Connor, who played Prince Charles.
Other winners of the night include "Schitt's Creek," which won Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy, as well as awards for Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy for their performances in the show. John Boyega won the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture for his role in "Small Axe."
Overall, the 78th Golden Globe Awards was a night of celebration and recognition of some of the best works in film and television. Despite the virtual format, the show still managed to capture the excitement and energy of a live event, and it was a great way to honor the talented individuals who contributed to these amazing productions.
